Lionsgate want you to visit their Cabin in the Woods!

24 years after it’s completion, the horror pic “Cabin in the Woods” ….. wait. Okay, my mistake, it’s only been two years since MGM’s “Cabin in the Woods” has been completed – – it just feels like a lifetime! You’ll recall the film, which features the likes of Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Brian White and Chris Hemsworth, was one of the victims of the whole ‘Oh shit! we’ve got no money now!’ brouhaha over at the Lion and has been gathering dust for the better part of twenty-four months. Deadline reports that Lionsgate are looking to swoop in and save the film, directed by Drew Goddard, who might possibly have it in cinemas before Christmas. That’s good news for a movie that has reportedly tested very well and has one heck of a fun sounding plot :

“The Cabin in the Woods” storyline provides a new twist on a classic scenario — in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope. Jenkins and Whitford will play white-collar co-workers with a mysterious connection to the cabin.

Co-star Brian White told Moviehole a year or so back that the film had tested through the roof. Here’s some of that interview :

And you’ve just finished shooting “Cabin in the Woods”?
Yeah, I’m doing a TV series right now called Men of a Certain Age – it’s myself, Ray Romano, Scott Bakula, Andre Braugher – which premieres December 8th on TNT, and yeah, I just wrapped Cabin in the Woods.
And there’s another Aussie in “Cabin in the Woods” Yeah, Chris Hemsworth. He’s a big deal now, because of Thor and Red Dawn. He’s fantastic in the film, but it’s essentially anchored by Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford – he’s of course from The West Wing, and Jenkins is an Oscar Nominee for his work in last year’s The Visitor. And of course Joss Whedon is behind the film – and we all know Joss from Buffy; he’s a mad scientist!
And is it the same tone as say, Buffy? Funnies and Frights?
He’s created a new take on the Cabin in the Woods formula and it’s incredibly funny, it’s gory, and it’s smart. Any genre fan is going to really, really going to love this. If you’re even remotely a fan of Joss I think you’re going to love it. I hear they just did a screening, and it went down very well- he apparently hit it out of the park.

At one stage MGM had announced that they were delaying the release of “Cabin in the Woods” so that they could convert it to 3D – looking back, that was probably just a fitting way of trying to cover up the studio’s financial troubles for a little longer. Still, it’s indeed likely that the film might get the post-convert treatment – nobody wants to see a 2D film these days, right? (Don’t answer that) – but it’ll be up to new owner, Lionsgate.
