Lonely Island’s Shaffer helms Chip ‘n’ Dale movie!?

Akiva Shaffer, one-third of the comedy group Lonely Island, will direct a live-action/CGI hybrid take on Disney’s “Rescue Rangers”.

Featuring classic chipmunk characters Chip ‘n’ Dale, the movie is described as “meta, something self-referential and cool”. With “Muppets” producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman on this one, expect a similar tone – something for everybody, if you will, with a few over-their-head gags, pop culture references and celeb cameos.

Dan Gregor and Doug Mand wrote the script; combined, their previous efforts include “Portlandia” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”. Film wise, Shaffer co-directed the mockumentary ”Popstar: Never Stop Stopping”.

Heat Vision, who had the scoop, says it’s unknown whether the project will go theatrical or direct to Disney’s streaming service Disney+.
