Quentin Tarantino’s slick eye for casting is still glaucoma free by sounds.
Hot on the heels of last week’s fist-thumping announcement that Kurt Russell had been signed to play the villain of QT’s spag-wes “Django Unchained” comes word that dependable character actor M.C Gainey (“Lost”, “Dukes of Hazzard”) has also jumped aboard.
Like Russell, Gainey will play a rogue in the Leonardo Di Caprio/Jamie Foxx-starring film.
According to Variety, the big guy is playing John Brittle, a real nasty piece of pie.
One of the overseers of the Carrucan Plantation, the nefarious character serves as a catalyst for the pic’s plot, as he rapes Django’s wife, Broomhilda, before branding Django’s cheek with the letter ‘R,’ which stands for ‘runaway.’
Jamie Foxx stars as Django and Christoph Waltz plays Dr. King Schultz, a German bounty hunter tracking Big John and his two brothers in order to collect a large reward. Schultz frees and teams up with Django, who helps him find and identify them.
Leonardo DiCaprio is set to co-star as villainous plantation owner Calvin Candie, while Kurt Russell is in negotiations to replace Kevin Costner as Ace Woody, a sadistic trainer who readies Candie’s male slaves to fight one another to the death.
Samuel L. Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher and Laura Cayouette co-star in the pic, which is pushing back a bit in the wake of a pelvic injury Waltz suffered during training for his physically-demanding role.
Interviewed Gainey a few years back for “Dukes of Hazzard” (in which he played Sherriff Roscoe Coltrane) and gotta say, what a nice guy; a testament to how great an actor he is, Gainey surprised me with his humble, sweet down-to-earth nature.
