Ratner off, Arbi & Fallah on Beverly Hills Cop 4

A couple of years after Brett Ratner attached himself to fourth instalment in the “Beverly Hills Cop” series, Paramount’s decided to go in a different direction – bringing in newbie filmmaking duo Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, writer-directors of indy edgy drama “Black”, to help send Detroit’s wisecracking police detective back to the 90210 zipcode.

The duo reportedly impressed the red leather jacket off of Eddie Murphy, back for his fourth go-round as Axel Foley (not counting the spin-off series that CBS opted not to pick up), and producer Jerry Bruckheimer with both their pitch and fondness of the original 1984 film – the tone of which this new one is said to be out to emulate.

When Ratner was onboard he mentioned that the movie would have more in common with the original Martin Brest film than the sequels, in that it would be a hardcore action-comedy that the MPAA would likely end up slapping an R rating on. In other words, the plan was to have Murphy play Foley, not Doctor Dolitte – – which is who I’m thinking turned up in “Beverly Hills Cop III”.

While the new film, written by “Mission : Impossible” alumni Josh Appelbaum & Andre Nemec, will reportedly see Foley back in his native Detroit (at least for part of the film) it’s inevitable that he’s going to find his way back to Beverly Hills, for some reason or another, in the flick. No word on whether that means original co-stars Judge Reinhold (who was a part of the CBS series that wasn’t picked up) or John Ashton will be joining Foley, but if the fans have anything to say about it, expect them to at least make appearances.

The plan for the long-gestating sequel is to get it before the cameras before the end of this year or early next.
