Redford quits acting? Actions speak louder than words…

Forget those click-baity “Redford retires from acting” articles – truth is, the Hollywood legend never said he was ‘out’. Not once. He suggested it may come to that. He’s as done as a fat man at a buffet.

At 80, it’s understandable that Robert Redford would want to “slow down” in regards to acting, and in this interview with grandson Dylan suggests that he’ll likely keep himself busy behind-the-scenes after his next couple of movies. Doing “take after take” is exhausting, says the Sundance kid, so will likely turn his attention to directing in a couple of years.

I’m thinking of moving in that direction and not acting so much. I’ve got two acting projects in the works: Our Souls At Night, with Jane Fonda, a love story for older people who get a second chance in life, and Old Man With A Gun, a lighter piece with Casey Affleck and Sissy Spacek. Once they’re done then I’m going to say, “Okay, that’s goodbye to all that,” and then just focus on directing.”

Never does Redford say “I’m retiring here. See ya! Thanks for watching Legal Eagles and Havana!”, he simply says “I’m getting older, it doesn’t make sense to say I’ll be in front of the camera until I’m no more. If anything, I’ll pull an Eastwood and spend more time behind the camera. That’s wise.”

While Redford says he’s “thinking” about moving past acting after these next two movies, that doesn’t mean some fabulous script isn’t going to come along to draw him back in front of the camera. Look at Joe Pesci, who retired years ago and yet is returning to the big screen to do a movie with Martin Scorsese shortly, and look at Dolph Lundgren, the action star said he’d retired years ago. And how many times has Sir Anthony Hopkins called it quits from acting. I personally don’t think it’s worth putting on a ‘goodbye party’ for Robert Redford just yet.

One Ryan Reynolds sequel that won’t be going ahead…
