Slender Man movie gets cast

If you haven’t heard of “Slender Man” then you soon will, as a movie is on the way. Directed by Sylvain White, the Screen Gems thriller is set to begin production in the spring.

Deadline reports that actors Joey King and Julia Goldani-Telles have been cast in the horror, alongside Annalise Basso, Jaz Sinclair, Talitha Bateman and Alex Fitzalan.  The script was written by David Birke and Mike Scannell, and is about the internet-created Meme of horrofying creature Slender Man.

So who is this Slender Man creature? He was originally innocently created as part of a photoshop contest back in 2009. He is depicted as a tall, lanky faceless man who stalks, abducts and traumatizes people – in particular, children. Slender Man then started to appear in people’s photographs and horror stories, and quotes from Slender Man began to appear and in turn create nightmares for practically everyone.

The creature became an all-too-real part of reality when in 2014, two 12 year old girls stabbed a classmate 19 times in Wisconsin, intending to “impress” Slender Man. The girls wanted to become proxies to Slender Man and live in his mansion, and apparently murder was the way to get there. The victim narrowly escaped death, and has since made a full recovery. Not sure what Slender Man thought about all this.

Of course this oversteps the fine line between fiction and reality, and though Slender Man is just a figment of an internet user’s (kinda messed up) mind, it makes it just a little too real. The incident sparked a doco, released on HBO, entitled “Beware the Slenderman”, but the upcoming Screen Gems film is separate to this production. Details about what exactly the film will focus on (real life or otherwise) have yet to be released.

The film will become your nightmare May 18, 2018.
