Ned director tapped for RoboCop reboot

Now this is a surprise.

Aussie wunderkind Abe Forsythe, better known for his on-screen work in “Always Greener” and the groundbreaking mini-series “Marking Time” before making the transition to directing, has been tapped to helm MGM’s reboot of “RoboCop”.

Envisioned as a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic, the film was originally set to be helmed by “District 9” helmer Neil Blomkamp. At the time, the South African filmmaker envisioned Peter Weller – despite his age – reprising Alex Murphy aka RoboCop for the new film. While it’s unlikely Weller would be behind the metal codpiece, a recent KFC commercial – which he lent his lungs to, reprising OCP’s most impenetrable officer – suggests he’d probably be up for a voice.. thing.

Blomkamp wanted to get another film going before “RoboCop” but the studio wouldn’t wait for him – enter the wonder from down under.

Forsythe, hot off indie horror-comedy “Little Monsters”, is no stranger to movies about fellas that wear helmets – as you’ll recall (or not?)…

The script, something original “RoboCop” writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner wrote years ago with Justin Rhodes, was brushed off for the new incarnation. Forsythe is believed to be rewriting it.

Like so many reboots of recent times, the new “RoboCop” will apparently skip over the events of its poorer sequels – in this case, “RoboCop 3”. It will also ignore the recent remake starring Joel Kinnaman – just as audiences did.
