It’s good news for one series, bad for another.
Firstly, Hulu has opted to drop the long-gestating Devil in the White City adaptation. At one stage set to star Keanu Reeves, and more recently Jeremy Allen White and Jude Law flirting with the lead parts, the small-screen offering of Erik Larson’s novel had been in the works for over a decade – once as a film.
For the unversed, Devil fixes on a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” built in the fair’s shadow.
ABC Signature plans to shop the series elsewhere. Matt Ross, who had been in talks to helm the series over at Hulu, is believed to be still onboard.
Meanwhile, That ’70s show star Wilmer Valderrama’s Zorro reboot inches forward with Disney signing Bryan Cogman (”Game of Thrones”) to write and serve as showrunner and executive producer.
In development since late 2021, The Disney+ series follows privileged caballero Diego De La Vega who returns to his hometown of El Pueblo de Los Angeles following a family tragedy. There, he discovers a culture of corruption and injustice that will lead him to take on the mantle of the masked vigilante Zorro — America’s first true superhero.
The new version is said to be a “bold reimagining” of the classic.
