TV Casting: Don Johnson has Daddy Issues and Dev Patel goes back to the 1800s

Don Johnson is joining Erin Foster in “Daddy Issues”, Fox’s single-camera comedy pilot from Foster and “New Girl” creator Liz Meriwether. Foster wrote the show based loosely on her life, and Kat Coiro is set to direct.

Deadline reports Johnson has been cast as the male lead Roman. The show revolves around Andi (Foster), who refuses to settle down, and her friendship with her playboy dad, Roman (Johnson). Andi’s world is turned upside down when she discovers her dad’s fallen in love with her best friend. Roman is described as a narcissist who perpetually dates younger women in an effort to fill a void in his life ever since his divorce — until he finds a new girlfriend he believes to be “the one.”

Dev Patel has been cast to play David Copperfield in a new retelling by writer/director Armando Iannucci. Not to be confused with the American illusionist by the same name, this retelling is based on Charles Dickens’ book “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” in which the title character navigates a chaotic world to find his elusive place within it.

The original “David Copperfield” was first published in 1850 and describes the journey of the titular protagonist — who was modeled after Dickens himself, from impoverished childhood to becoming a successful author, thanks to perseverance and despite a lack of personal discipline.
